Fake short messages and lousy subscription traps are currently trending! A subscription trap is currently active that claims to be DHL and has follow-up costs of at least €68.

Beware of an SMS notifying you of a package that is supposedly stopped at the DHL distribution center. This short message is tricky because it lures you into a subscription trap.

The content of this message is not unknown to us; in the past few weeks there have been frequent short messages claiming to be Post, DHL or a logistics company in general. You read in the SMS:

Package [NUMBER*****] was stopped at the distribution center. Track your shipment here: [LINK]

The link from the short message leads to a website that is modeled on the DHL tracking website ( compare ). But upon closer inspection, you notice that you are not on the delivery service's website.

And this is exactly the trick the fake website uses: it tricks visitors into believing that they are with DHL and can only activate the package with a harmless transfer of €2.

Fake DHL!

One has to be very clear: both SMS and the supposed website are fake. The specious content was invented to lure the recipients of the short message into a subscription trap.

This subscription trap is unpleasant: Anyone who thinks they are sending information about the package to DHL is actually filling out a form agreeing to a payment of at least €68.

This payment, as we have also seen in similar cases ( like here ), is usually for some irrelevant online offer that is not defined in more detail.

Conclusion

This method is not new:

Very few users are likely to be interested in actually paying 69 euros per month in order to be able to use services that are no longer relevant. Not to mention the fact that the SMS did not come from the post office, whose site was recreated for fraudulent purposes and criminals also have the users' complete address and credit card details.
