A message is making the rounds on Facebook that is making many users nervous. It is said here that due to climate change, one of the most poisonous spiders in the world has now become native to Germany!

This post is about:

It says:

Thornfinger: One of the most poisonous spiders in Germany! Absolute caution is required!!!!!!! The nurse's finger spider has also become native to Germany due to climate change. Their bite is poisonous.

Information:

This spider was truly introduced to Germany once. The content on Facebook is not correct and is poorly researched, because there are, for example, many more known species (378!) of the thorn-finger spider.

The species native to us would be the nurse's finger (Cheiracanthium punctorium). Along with the water spider (Argyroneta aquatica), the nurse's thorn finger is the only Central European spider whose bite can have medically relevant consequences for humans, although it is not depicted as extremely dramatically as in the text.

The bite of the thorn finger is comparable to a wasp sting, but in the event of an allergic reaction it can lead to local paralysis, chills and fever.

If you don't have an allergic reaction to the poison, even less happens. There are also occasional reports of severe swelling at the bite site.

Under certain circumstances, the affected flesh CAN then become partially necrotic, i.e. die. The bite is not fatal and there is no danger to life either.
