Since mid-August, two previously unknown perpetrators have defrauded several women and stolen cash. Their scam: They act as healers and want to free their victims from a curse.

Initially there were three cases in Neugraben-Fischbek and Hausbruch involving alleged healers. The two previously unknown perpetrators specifically targeted women of Russian origin on the street and claimed that the women were cursed. They managed to gain the trust of women. To do this, they used, among other things, a so-called “egg trick”, in which the women had to break an egg they had bought themselves. Unbeknownst to the women, the perpetrators had exchanged the egg for one that had apparently been prepared.

When they were smashed, a black liquid came out, which was supposed to be a symbol of bad things. Ultimately, the women handed over cash, in one case even a five-figure amount of money. The women got the money either from home or from the bank. The perpetrators later wrapped the money in a cloth they had brought with them and asked the women to carry it on their bodies for a longer period of time and not to talk about it to anyone. This was supposed to free the women from the curse. Ultimately, the women discovered that the perpetrators had exchanged the money for scraps of paper.

In the meantime, the alleged healers are apparently looking for potential victims in the southeast of Hamburg. On Wednesday, an 81-year-old from Lohbrügge was supposed to be cheated on by the women. However, because an attentive bank employee called the police, the money was not handed over.

According to what we know so far, the two women can be described as follows:

1)

  • about 60 to 70 years old
  • about 1.55 m to 1.60 m tall
  • Eastern/Southeast European appearance
  • corpulent
  • Gray hair
  • spoke Russian and probably also Romanian
  • had a wart on the tip of the left nose

2)

  • around 30 to 45 years old
  • about 1.55 m to 1.70 m tall
  • Eastern/Southeast European appearance
  • “normal” to strong figure
  • white-blonde colored hair (sometimes open, sometimes worn in a braid)
  • Glasses

The police inform and advise:

Fraudsters are extremely creative when it comes to getting their victims' money. The scenarios chosen often put the victims under pressure, so that their gut feeling is switched off and the victim acts “as if under duress”.

  • Ask yourself: Is what is being claimed realistic?
  • Draw attention to yourself and, if necessary, ask others for help.
  • Inform someone you trust and discuss what concerns the unknown person has addressed to you.
  • Be suspicious, listen to your gut feeling and under no circumstances allow yourself to be put under pressure!
  • Never give money or valuables to people you do not know.
  • The following applies in all cases: If you have the slightest suspicion, call 110.
