Currently, in March 2015, an animal that was long considered extinct in Germany is making headlines: a wolf. While many wolf lovers are happy about this, others immediately have the “bad wolf” from the fairy tales in their heads and fear for their livestock, if not for their lives.

This status post on Facebook must have arisen from this intention:

The wording:

“And wolves are supposed to be shy???
The video from giffhorn says something different…”

In the video, captured by a surveillance camera, you can see a wolf sneaking around a doghouse, finally grabbing the excited dog and dragging him away with his chain. The whole thing is said to have happened in Gifhorn, Lower Saxony.

But does the video really come from Germany?

No! The video first appeared on YouTube on February 12th and comes from Mezhdurechensk in Russia. Wolves are not uncommon in the nearby forests, only this wolf apparently dared to venture into a more densely populated residential area.

Does the video show that wolves are not shy?

Despite all the horror stories, wolves are very shy and would only attack people in an extreme emergency. That wolf doesn't seem to be particularly interested in the dog and initially sneaks around the hut curiously.

Did the wolf kill the dog?

Unfortunately we were unable to find out about this. In this context, however, there is an interesting comment from a user on YouTube who says:

“You can clearly see that the she-wolf is grabbing the dog by the scruff of the neck, not by the throat, as is usual in an attack. It took her three attempts to avoid being injured by the dog. From minute 1:33 onwards the dog is in the usual rigid state.”

Conclusion:

The video is real. However, it does not come from Germany, but from Russia. The behavior shows more of a she-wolf trying to bring a naughty cub to reason, not that of an attacking and ravenous wolf.

Apparently the uploader of the video on Facebook doesn't seem to be a real wolf friend in general, as there are even more anti-wolf postings there. In this case at least he flat out lied, probably to turn the residents of Lower Saxony against the “problem wolf”.
