Cologne – On Monday night (July 17th), two previously unknown burglars hit Cologne Cathedral. According to the current state of the investigation, the men were apparently targeting tools from the cathedral construction works in the south tower. However, their prey was left behind as they fled. The Cologne police are looking for witnesses.

At around 2:30 a.m., an employee (42) of the security service alerted the police control center. The unknown persons had previously triggered a burglary alarm at the external visitor entrance to the south tower in the basement. Video surveillance shows two middle-aged men escaping through the damaged door at 2:05 a.m. The images are currently being evaluated by the criminal police.

The first was dressed in a light muscle shirt with a striking print on the front, jeans and light sneakers. This man also had a toolbox and a backpack with him. However, the unknown man left both behind when he fled on the stairs leading outside and on Roncalliplatz. The accomplice, who was also on the run, was wearing a black jacket, jeans and light-colored sneakers.

The alerted police surrounded the cathedral with several patrol cars. Since the officers deployed could not rule out the possibility that there were other suspects in the cathedral, the entire building was initially searched using service dogs. As a result, the burglars did not penetrate the nave. Rather, they had taken the spiral staircase in the south tower to a high-rise construction workshop. After breaking open the door and the cupboards behind it, the men fled the cathedral with their loot.

The police confiscated the items left behind on the escape route. Contents: Tools and radio equipment from the cathedral construction works. The detection service was called in.

The investigating criminal commissioner 51 is urgently asking witnesses for information on telephone number. 0221 229-0 or by email at [email protected] .
