Social networks are always a source of the strangest discussions, but at the same time they are always a mirror of how people perceive their surroundings and how we perceive our surroundings.

Because it is true, and this is the only personal sentence I will leave on this topic, I would never have noticed this product or the effect it produced. Neither positive nor negative.

It's about a doormat, or rather about the discussion about it, which many people may have paid peripheral attention to, but which has now entered its third round. Inconclusive.

This doormat is really in the Poco range and depicts some buildings from Istanbul, including a mosque. Most people would probably never have noticed this doormat, but it has been heavily discussed on the Facebook page “Turkish Diaspora in Germany” since December 25, 2015. The original call was :

Dear Sir or Madam,
we noticed a product you sell - a doormat called “Istanbul”, which, among other things, shows a mosque.

We would like to politely advise you that depicting a mosque on a product commonly used as a doormat may cause irritation and possibly even anger among some Muslims. Religious images of any kind that are “trampled” are frowned upon by many Muslims. We are firmly convinced that this aspect was not taken into account in the marketing of the above-mentioned product. We therefore suggest that you reconsider depicting the mosque on this product.

Best regards

The accusation is somewhat reminiscent of Aldi's soap , which was taken out of the range at the time because it depicted a mosque. Only this time it's a doormat. As mentioned at the beginning, this shows how differently people perceive their surroundings and how differently they interpret them . For some this doormat reflects disrespectful Islamophobia, for others it is... Doormat.

Poco replies

Just a few hours later (well, the social media employee at Poco would probably have to briefly interrupt his Christmas party in the evening) Poco responded to the first storm against their own site:

Dear friends,

We were amazed to see how polarizing the motif of a doormat can be. We certainly don't want that - nor do we want to offend or hurt anyone. We therefore expressly distance ourselves from political and/or racist statements.

We would like to ask you the same: pay attention to how you word something. Act respectfully, remain polite, fair and objective.

This is the place to exchange ideas with each other and with us about everything about furnishing and renovating. The same applies here as in your own four walls: everything must be in order. That's why people who spread insults, obscene, vulgar, sexually oriented, political, copyright violations and illegal content will be boldly kicked out and/or their posts will be deleted.

Your POCO team.

You share your own astonishment and you can actually assume that no one worked on these motifs for the doormats with malicious intent. It remains unclear at this point what will happen next with the sale of the doormats. Well, in a way it makes sense, hardly anyone decides on such processes on Christmas Day in the evening - and especially not the content manager of the Facebook page.

This short statement did not fall on fertile ground, on the contrary: the tone of the following answer has become harsher, the expressions have become clearer:

Sorry and remove item from range = FAILURE!!!!!!!

The racist posts come from Islamophobic neo-Nazis!

How will it go on?

At this point we are just observers. We will now be curious, with slight question marks on our heads, waiting to see how Poco reacts, what the Turkish diaspora in Germany will do next, and what kind of hat day this discussion will be given. #footmatgate? #pocogate? It hasn't been decided yet.

We sit back, we don't judge at this point. Poco and the Turkish diaspora in Germany have to work this out among themselves.

However, we found the following article at Deko-Idee24.de :
