animal rights organization is causing a lot of excitement among animal lovers : It's about alleged animal cruelty in the Wuppertal Zoo.

We received many inquiries about that article. PETA reports on elephants that are made subdued with special elephant hooks in order to hold still for photos and events such as weddings or elephant rides with zoo visitors.
In addition, PETA shows a one and a half minute long video with footage of the elephants on their website.

The Wuppertal Zoo reacts

After several media outlets picked up the PETA video and description to report on the allegations, Wuppertal Zoo also commented On their homepage it says:

“The Green Zoo Wuppertal takes criticism of its animal husbandry seriously at all times, including the criticism currently raised by the animal rights organization Peta about the keeping of elephants in the Green Zoo Wuppertal. However, the allegations made in the campaign that elephants are being beaten or tortured cannot be substantiated by the published images and video material and are emphatically rejected. On the contrary, the Green Zoo and its employees enjoy a high level of recognition for their expertise in dealing with the elephants. Unfortunately, the organization has not yet complied with the city of Wuppertal's request on October 19th to have the complete image and video material made available so that it can be discussed with Peta.

The Green Zoo Wuppertal is one of the most successful keepers of African elephants in Europe.
Over many years, an elephant herd with a stable social structure was built up, in which there have been 10 successful elephant births and rearings to date. Through positive reinforcement in daily interaction, a close relationship of trust exists between the animals and their keepers, which forms the basis for direct contact with the elephants and enables personal encounters within a defined framework. The Green Zoo's many years of expertise were recognized by the European zoo association EAZA by appointing zoo director Dr. Arne Lawrenz was entrusted with the management of the European Endangered Species Breeding Program (EEP) in 2016.

As ambassadors for their species, the elephants enable the Green Zoo to make its guests aware of the threats to these impressive animals and to report on its activities to protect the elephants and their habitat. For example, the Green Zoo supports the International Elephant Foundation, which promotes the research and protection of elephants. The Kruger National Park in South Africa is supported in its fight against poaching. For the Green Zoo, these are parts of its important educational function as well as its task of sustainably promoting nature and species protection.”
