Every second person enjoys the shared experience and scans their surroundings

Almost half of all guardians play online games with their children.

Parents are not only curious about who their children are dealing with, but are also very interested in immersing themselves in the world of games.

This is what researchers from Bond University in cooperation with experts from the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association .

More and more women

For the study, the researchers surveyed 1,234 Australian households with 3,135 people. 67 percent said they regularly play video games at home.

Older Australians make up the largest group of “new players”. A full 43 percent of those surveyed who were 65 years old or older at the time of the survey often pass the time by playing video games.

Seniors are particularly interested in VR offerings because of their limited movement options.

Women also play a lot. 46 percent of all people who said they gamble regularly are female.

“Australians play because of the social connection, whether that’s with family or friends. “You play to reduce stress, to have a challenge, to learn, or for the physical and mental benefits,”

explains study author Jeff Brand from Bond University.

Watch children

Every second parent takes part in their children's video games. Often cited reasons for parents' increased desire to play include shared fun and education, but also the curiosity of the guardians.

They want to see for themselves what kind of games their children play and who they socialize with in online games.

The study also shows that only eight percent play alone, while the rest play with friends, family or strangers over the Internet.

The shared experience, often in conjunction with a headset for communication, is now the fundamental appeal of the games.

“Games are no longer a subculture – everyone plays. “We have moved beyond the classic clichés that emerged in the early days of video games,”

Brand concluded.
