Save electricity and energy in the household
In his two-room apartment, our reporter has seven windows, six radiators and a shower. His additional costs amount to just under 2,160 euros per year - of which 813 euros are for heating and 115 euros for hot water. We want to know how he can reduce his utility costs without having to spend too much. An energy consultant comes to your apartment and checks the options.
Save heating energy
Let's start with the radiators. The first tip: digital thermostats. These allow the temperature to be adjusted precisely - instead of the usual levels from zero to five, specific degree numbers can be read. The digital versions are available from hardware stores starting at around eleven euros. To install, simply unscrew the old thermostat, attach the included adapter and attach the digital thermostat. This should save almost ten percent of heating costs.
Further tips: Bleed the radiators regularly to improve energy efficiency. For heaters that are located in front of an external wall, the expert recommends using insulation and reflection mats in the space between the radiator and the wall. The expert advises against mobile heaters powered by electricity. These are cheap to buy, but expensive to use.

Now about the windows. Valuable and expensive heat can escape here. To check whether the windows seal well, the leaf test is recommended. Simply clamp conventional paper between the window and the frame. If the paper doesn't tear when you pull it out of the closed window, there is room for improvement. Then new insulation is worthwhile. Cost: around six euros per window.
Last check: the bathroom. It is worth replacing the old shower head with a new, water-saving shower head. This limits the amount of water flowing through and at the same time saves heating energy. With a modern shower head you can save a good 17 percent on water costs.
