Two senior citizens have already become victims of brazen tricksters this week. The police urgently warn against the scam and give tips on how to behave.

On Tuesday (June 11, 2019), a previously unknown person called a 75-year-old in Roßtal (district of Fürth) and pretended to be her son. Using an excuse, he demanded cash from the older woman, which a friend would pick up. A short time later, a man actually appeared at the door and accepted several thousand euros.

When the victim noticed the fraud, she immediately called the police. A search that was launched immediately did not lead to the arrest of a suspect.

Description of the money collector:

Male, thick figure, southern appearance. At the time of collecting the money he was dressed entirely in white.

Another case occurred on Wednesday (June 12, 2019) at around 1:00 p.m. in Fürth, Fichtenstrasse. In this case, too, a previously unknown man called a 79-year-old lady and pretended to be a relative who needed financial support. After a short time, the person who had “promised” to pick it up was at the door and accepted several thousand euros.

Description of the collector:

Female, around 30 years old, approx. 165 cm tall and slim. She has shoulder-length hair and was wearing dark trousers, a light jacket and a cap or hat at the time of the crime.

The criminal police commissioner investigates all cases intensively and asks for information from the public. Witnesses are asked to contact the police on 0911 2112-3333.

There have already been further attempts by the brazen con artists in Nuremberg, in the Fürth district and in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district. Fortunately, no money was handed over here.

Through clever conversation, the perpetrators often give older people the impression that the caller is actually a family member or relative. In this way, perpetrators get their victims to hand over large amounts of cash or valuables. That's why the police are once again issuing an urgent warning about this perfidious scam.

The officers give the following tips on how to behave:

  • Be suspicious if someone doesn't introduce themselves by name on the phone. Never mention the names of your relatives; rather, ask the caller to give their own name.
  • Do not reveal any details about your family or financial circumstances.
  • Hang up the phone immediately as soon as the person you are talking to demands money from you.
  • Make sure that the caller is really a relative (e.g. grandchild): Call the person in question using the phone number you already know and use and have the facts confirmed.
  • Never give money or other valuables to unknown people.
  • Don't let yourself be intimidated or pressured. Your real relatives will understand this and will not put you under any pressure.
  • If you find the call suspicious, inform the police immediately on 110.
  • If you have become a victim, report the incident to the police immediately.
  • We ask relatives to inform their older relatives.
