Trial begins against Martin “The One”. What punishment will await him?

With “Wall Street Market”, Martin built an illegal marketplace that quickly became the second largest criminal trading platform in the world. This didn't go unnoticed by investigators. International investigative authorities joined forces to take action against Martin and his alleged accomplices. But it will take a while before they can actually arrest them.  

What happened?

It all started in 2019. On April 23rd and 24th, 2019, the General Public Prosecutor's Office in Frankfurt am Main - the central office for combating cybercrime - and the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested a 31-year-old suspect from Bad Vilbel, a 29-year-old suspect from the Esslingen district and A 22-year-old suspect from Kleve was arrested and their apartments were searched. The German nationals are strongly suspected of having operated illegal online marketplace “ WALL STREET MARKET Darknet, The server infrastructure of the criminal platform was secured by officials from the Federal Criminal Police Office.

The online marketplace “ WALL STREET MARKET ” was the world's second largest criminal trading platform, through which drugs (including cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamines), spied-out data, forged documents and malware were traded. The illegal trading platform was only accessible via the TOR network on the so-called darknet and was aimed at international trade in criminal goods. Most recently, there were over 63,000 sales offers posted on the online marketplace, as well as over 1,150,000 customer accounts and over 5,400 sellers registered. Users of the online marketplace used the cryptocurrencies BITCOIN and MONERO . Those allegedly responsible for the marketplace are said to have received commission payments of 2 to 6 percent of the sales value for processing sales of illegal goods via the platform.

The arrests were preceded by extensive undercover investigations in which US and Dutch law enforcement authorities as well as the European police authority Europol took part. Since March 2019, the investigation has been directed against the three German nationals who were identified as suspects. After those suspected of being responsible for the illegal online marketplace switched the platform to maintenance mode on April 23, 2019 and began transferring the customers' funds deposited on the marketplace to themselves (in the scene this procedure is referred to as an " exit scam ") cyber specialists of the Federal Criminal Police Office between April 23rd and May 2nd, 2019 During searches of the suspects' apartments, cash amounting to over 550,000 euros as well as cryptocurrencies BITCOIN and MONERO in a six-figure amount, several high-quality motor vehicles and numerous other pieces of evidence, in particular computers and data storage media, were seized. A firearm was also found and seized from the 22-year-old suspect from Kleve.

At the request of the Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor's Office, the judge at the Giessen District Court ordered the suspects to be taken into custody for commercial purposes for providing an opportunity to distribute narcotics without authorization.

The servers of the illegal online marketplace were seized on May 2, 2019.
