Düren/Hürtgenwald/Kreuzau – Due to current events, the police are urgently warning against false police officers on the phone (see also press releases from KPB Düren from May 4th, 2017 and April 20th, 2017).

Late on Thursday evening, numerous concerned citizens (mainly from the communities of Hürtgenwald and Kreuzau) reported to the control center of the Düren district police authority. The reporters had previously received highly suspicious calls from alleged police officers. A man and a woman pretended to be from the police.

They want to warn those called; The police made arrests and also identified indications that those called were the focus of the perpetrators. To do this, information about valuables in the house of the person being called is required, after all, they want to protect them from harm.

In some cases, renewed contact was also announced. It's all just made up! The Düren district police authority expressly warns against false police officers who pose as law enforcement officers in a professional manner, using ever new stories and scenarios. The potential perpetrators are regularly on the lookout for “easy victims” whom they make fearful and insecure until they see an opportunity to get their jewelry and cash.

The perfidious:

The fake police officers appeared on the calls' screens with a phone number that ended with "110" and was intended to underline the credibility of the police tip-off. Such numbers can now be forged using technical tools.

The police once again expressly warn against this scam and advise you to protect yourself through attention and healthy suspicion:

  • If a caller claims to be a police officer, get their name, call the local police and make sure the call is genuine. Every real police officer understands such an approach.
  • Never tell strangers about your valuables or your financial situation.
  • Never hand over money, jewelry or other valuables to messengers, even if they claim to be envoys from the police, public prosecutor's office or court.
  • Do not let strangers into your house or apartment. Bring in someone you trust.

The specialists in crime prevention and victim protection are available to you for further advice. You can reach them during office hours on 02421 949-8711.
