Fake news often spreads extremely quickly – especially on social networks. The EU is now calling for increased measures against misinformation.

Above all, the EU Commission is demanding more transparency and effectiveness in dealing with fake news.

Misinformation about COVID-19

Triggered by the Corona crisis, false reports about COVID-19 proliferated.
WHO and UN warn of an infodemic. Now the measures need to be optimized here.

Vera Jourova, Vice President of the EU Commission, said: “Platforms must become more accountable and transparent.”

Code of conduct for measures against fake news

Facebook, Google and Twitter signed a code of conduct two years ago. Later, Microsoft and TikTok also got involved. In doing so, they confirmed that they would take action against hate speech and fake news.

But this code of conduct is primarily voluntary and has shortcomings. Reuters was able to see an assessment from the first year after the social networks joined the code of conduct.

There was a lack of information about restrictions, and contradictory and incompletely defined applications of rules of conduct could also be found.

More effective approach

The EU is now calling on social network operators to invest more energy in dealing with fake news.

The required effectiveness and transparency are missing, platforms need to open up, data needs to be made more accessible.
