Face scanner app “Facezam” is a duck! Facebook has never authorized applications to identify people.

The new app “ Facezam ” doesn’t find the social media profiles of people you photograph as you pass by on the street. What many media outlets had reported on now turned out to be a hoax.

“Facezam could mean the end of our anonymous society,” the app’s alleged founder, Jack Kenyon, was quoted as saying.

Hoax quickly uncovered

Many reports continued:

“Users will be able to identify anyone in a matter of seconds, meaning privacy will no longer exist in public.”

A photo would therefore be enough to use facial recognition to assign the correct profile to billions of Facebook users within ten seconds.

The case has now been cleared up and the English “Telegraph” is one of the first media outlets to correct their report.

The viral marketing agency Zacozo . And there is already a note on Facezam's website that the application is a hoax.

“The app never existed and will never be published,” reassure those who came up with the idea. They were inspired by the music app “Shazam,” which identifies songs that are unfamiliar to users.

Facebook insists on rules

Facebook had already commented on the matter even before the hoax was discovered:

“This activity violates our Terms of Service and we are contacting the developer to ensure the app is made compliant.”

In general, Facebook takes a strict look at apps that use data from the social media giant: These may only be launched with prior approval.
