Be careful when making acquaintances via Facebook, not every romance that begins online ends well.

A 68-year-old woman from Speyer reported a so-called “love scamming scam” on Sunday. She met a man via Facebook at the beginning of September who claimed to be working on an oil rig off Spain. After that we wrote to each other practically every day.

The strange man claimed to have fallen head over heels in love with the 68-year-old. When the man canceled a planned meeting in Germany at short notice, the woman ultimately had doubts about his information. When he then sent her a link through which the injured party could log in and make a transfer for him, the woman decided to report the matter to the police. There has been no financial damage so far.

Love or romance scamming describes a modern form of marriage fraud. In this form of fraud, the perpetrator creates fake profiles on social media platforms and dating sites in order to pretend to be in love with the other person. The aim is to obtain financial benefits from the victim.

A one-off payment of a sum of money is often not enough for the perpetrator. New excuses are constantly being invented to persuade the victim to dispose of further assets. Often the victims, with whom a deep relationship of trust has previously been built, are put under extreme emotional pressure.

The police therefore advise the following behavior:

Do not accept requests from unknown people on social media platforms. Be suspicious if “online acquaintances” fall head over heels in love with you, but a personal meeting is repeatedly canceled.

Never send money to such acquaintances and never give them your account details. Don't let yourself be put under emotional pressure. Contact the police immediately if you suspect you are in contact with such a scammer.
