Facebook is supposed to monitor its users via Instagram and the cell phone camera. A lawsuit has now been filed against the social media giant.

Facebook rejects the allegations that users were observed via its own cell phone camera and cites a bug that has since been fixed as the reason.

Spying via cell phone camera

According to complaints from users, they were observed by Facebook on their cell phones while using the Instagram app.

According to the company, this is a bug, but it has already been fixed.

A lawsuit against Facebook was filed in federal court in San Francisco on September 17, 2020.

Access to camera of Instagram users

Instagram is said to have accessed the smartphone cameras. Even if this feature was not actively used.

Parent company Facebook states that this was a software error that gave an incorrect notification about Instagram's access to the camera. It appeared that the camera was active, which led to complaints from users.

Content of the indictment

Now the company has been charged. According to media reports, the content of the lawsuit is alleged cell phone spying on iPhones, reports Bloomberg .

Brittany Conditi, an Instagram user, states in the lawsuit that Facebook deliberately used the spying. The reason for this should be the collection of “lucrative and valuable user data to which the company would not have access in any other way,” which Facebook can use for market research purposes.

There is no statement from Facebook on this yet.
