The history of humanity offers enough examples of bold lies, distorted truths and deliberately spread false reports.

ZDF has summarized some of the most successful fake news: At the end of the 15th century, the living conditions of the population in Europe worsened dramatically. Epidemics spread and kill large parts of the population. Long and harsh winters cause harvest losses. The culprits are quickly identified: witches!

They are blamed not only for the weather, but for everything that goes wrong... The stories they make up are so successful that an estimated 60,000 witches and sorcerers were arrested, tortured and killed in Europe between the 15th and 18th centuries. Almost half of them are in today's Germany.

Nothing works in ancient Greece without divine advice. And to get it, you have to travel to a holy place: for example, Delphi. The most famous and influential oracle in the ancient world is found there: thousands make a pilgrimage to Delphi to have their future predicted. Many take difficult journeys to achieve this, carrying valuable gifts with them.

For without appropriate gifts there is no prophecy. A seer – called Pythia – receives the oracle sayings. A chosen one, virginal, with the gift of seeing into the future. According to the ideas at the time, the prophetic gift was bestowed on her by the god Apollo. The more valuable the votive offerings, the more useful the information will be to the petitioners. The mysterious oracle sayings are never clear - and therefore rarely wrong.

Successful with made-up stories, that undoubtedly also applies to her: Thérèse Humbert. She rises from a farm girl from the provinces to the biggest fraudster of her era. She finances her entire life on credit.

Her trick: she spreads stories about her supposedly fabulous fortune everywhere.
