Fake shop or legitimate shopping portal? It is often difficult to recognize this.

Fake shops can really spoil your desire to shop online. Problems with payments, problems with deliveries. And if you do receive the items you ordered at all, they are usually of such poor quality that you would like to slap yourself because you fell for such a fake shop.

One wants a warning. Information that tells you loud and clear: “Stay away from this shop! It’s fake!” – That would be perfect. Were? It WILL be perfect, it says correctly. Because support will soon be there.

Artificial intelligence support

Our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet was honored here for a research project in which fake shops are identified with the help of artificial intelligence.

“With the fake shop detector, we are taking another important step in this direction. It is planned that this will be available as a plugin for the Internet browser by the end of the year. Installing this plugin will analyze and check every page you visit while surfing the Internet. If it is a fake shop, you will receive a warning in just a few seconds.”

How are the fake shops exposed?

Fake shops are usually structured according to a certain pattern. The same images and text are often used. Many of the shops can only be found online for a few days.

Andre Lindley, research engineer at AIT, has now developed an artificial intelligence that can detect fake shops.

Lindley explains: “There are hardly any spelling mistakes anymore because fraudsters invest a lot in deceiving consumers. But the fraudsters still leave digital fingerprints, even if it’s just a code in the comment field.”

The AI searches a website for certain characteristics and manages to recognize it as fake. An evaluation is carried out and the data is also entered into Watchlist Internet, so that the existing list of fake shops is constantly updated here.

Fake shop detector using a browser plugin

You don't need any software, just a browser plug-in, which should be available for Google Chrome and Firefox before the end of the year.

In the future, a warning will be issued to users when surfing and shopping on the Internet.
A report about this will also be passed on to scientists for research purposes. This is where the information will be added to the existing warning list. Further data is not collected.

According to the researchers, artificial intelligence is 100 percent correct when it comes to identifying clear fake shops. In 1,350 fake shops, the results were evaluated correctly in 97 percent of cases. However, the AI models should be further optimized to make online shopping safer in the future.

“Live blacklists” will follow at the beginning of 2021, in which users can search directly for shops.
