Mainz – A young Frenchman rented an apartment in Mainz Neustadt via the Internet.

Based on the design impression of the homepage, the man assumed that it was an offer from the Internet portal Airbnb, which enables the booking and short-term rental of private accommodation. The apartment hunter transferred a negotiated three-digit amount via his bank to a recipient in Spain. When he traveled to Mainz to take over the apartment, he could neither meet the landlord nor was he known to the house in Kaiser-Karl-Ring.

However, this apartment was never offered on Airbnb. The fraudster tried to use a fake website to give the impression that the apartment was being offered via the trustworthy platform Airbnb, which is known to have a secure payment system and therefore fraud is virtually impossible.

When booking through Airbnb, Airbnb protects hosts and guests by processing all transactions through its secure payment platform. Guests pay through Airbnb when they book a property and hosts do not receive payment until 24 hours after check-in. So if guests communicate and pay exclusively via Airbnb, their money is protected at all times.
