And they keep trying! Late in the evening of January 26th, 2017, a large number of citizens from Mayen and the Maifeld area received calls from alleged criminal investigators.

Some of the callers used names of actual detectives and used various strategies. The Rhineland-Palatinate police therefore warn:

Sometimes you introduced yourself as a detective and stated that you had found the name of the person you were calling on a list that burglars who had just been arrested had had with them. Sometimes you introduced yourself as a detective and warned those you called of an impending break-in. Those called were instructed to close the windows and shutters because they were also potential victims.

In both variants, the callers asked many questions and also asked what valuables or cash were kept in the house. Fortunately, those called saw through the plan, hung up and contacted the police. In this context, the police expressly point out that police and criminal investigators will never ask whether and where they keep your valuables.

Do not give any information over the telephone. Be particularly careful if a visit is announced over the phone. Write down the phone number shown. If you have the impression that you have been targeted by a false law enforcement officer, do not hesitate and contact your nearest police station immediately or call the police emergency number 110.
