The headlines about a daycare center in Erfurt were harsh: “Kita abolishes carnival” or “Kindergarten cancels carnival”. But these titles reflect one-sidedly.

The most important things about carnival at a daycare center in Erfurt in brief:

  • Kita does not celebrate on Rose Monday
  • There was an event beforehand
  • Headline reporting leads to aggression towards those involved

When it comes to this topic, it is not enough to simply consume headlines, as the headlines do not give a clear picture of the situation. Because we have a dilemma here, which can be described using Laschyk's thesis:

Do you want to write a journalistic article? Choose two things, you have to do without a third:

  • Not too long
  • Easy to understand
  • Content correct

The titles shorten the topic so much that the content is presented in a tendentious manner. But let’s take a close look at the situation. What happened at the “Campus Kinderland” daycare center in Erfurt?

the initial situation

In fact, there is a request not to bring the children to the daycare center in disguise on Rose Monday, as there is no carnival celebration there on that day. This is also evident from a letter from parents. The passage in question in the letter to parents reads:

The team at the facility is very concerned about dealing with one another in a culturally sensitive manner. That is why we have decided that carnival will only be celebrated in the Campus Kinderland on January 17, 2020.

Please do not dress up your child on Rose Monday (February 24th, 2020) and Shrove Tuesday (February 25th, 2020), but instead take advantage of the celebration in the USV. Any carnival costumes you bring with you will remain in the child's compartment on both days.

Thank you for your understanding.

This request led to a daycare parent contacting the press. The resulting consequences were partly one-sided reporting, which had a strong tendency towards scandal and headlines and suffered from omissions.

Carnival at the daycare center

The request not to come to the daycare center in disguise during Carnival is of course controversial. In principle, everything can be discussed as long as it is done within a fair and expert framework.

What happened at the daycare center and what can be seen in the letter to parents, but is sometimes not even noted in the media: The daycare center celebrates carnival in the form of a “Winter Wonderland” costume sports festival. What can certainly be discussed again at this point is the date, as the celebrations already took place in mid-January.

Basically no problem during carnival, as the crazy time starts on November 11th. starts at 11:11 a.m. and lasts until Ash Wednesday, but the daycare center's celebrated carnival festival is more than 4 weeks away from Rose Monday.

Nevertheless, it was the daycare center's carnival celebration, which is clearly noted in the parents' letter, but was also clearly mentioned as such in the advance notices. One reads about these celebrations:

Which costume will you wear? Pirate, Pippi Longstocking, Spiderman or, true to the motto, do you come as a snowman or ice queen? ….we are so excited. Our USV team and the team from the “Campus-Kinderland” daycare center have already decided – of course nothing will be revealed yet

We look forward to seeing you. The surprise guest arrives at 4 p.m. - those who arrive early get the best seats.

This festival also took place as planned on January 17, 2020 and the participants appeared in typical carnival costumes. Whether cardboard noses, superheroes or princesses, everyone was represented. Pictures of this costume party can be found on Facebook on the University Sports Club Erfurt eV page ( here ).

What's interesting at this point is that we're not dealing with anything new here. The headline reporting also completely ignores the fact that this has been a common practice of the daycare center for years and that this celebration has been organized together with the university sports club for around ten years It will be exciting to question why the daycare center is being pushed into the crossfire of the media this year of all times.

The aftermath

The headlines, as well as the sometimes tendentious reporting about a ban on carnival or the abolition of carnival, have caused a lot of attention for the daycare center. After about 10 years of these celebrations being practiced, the daycare center has come under criticism. A criticism that does not come from discussions with those responsible on site, but rather from headline reporting.

The “Campus Kinderland” daycare center now found itself in the situation of having to publish a statement on this. It refers once again to the fact that there have already been celebrations and that a further celebration on Shrove Monday or Shrove Tuesday is therefore not planned for the daycare center ( see HERE ). In its statement, the KiTa also refers to its pedagogical concept .

A negative development, which is likely to have been triggered by the headline reporting, is the hostility towards the employees of the daycare center and members of the Thuringia Student Union. We are in contact with someone involved who has described to us that the daycare team is being massively threatened and that photos and names of the employees are also being distributed in various circles for the purpose of further threats. Furthermore, parents are now also very unsettled.

And that's exactly what headline reporting shouldn't trigger in the end. In principle, one can discuss to what extent it makes sense to hold a costume party a month before Shrove Monday. The problem: It hasn't bothered anyone in the last few years. Especially when you consider that this costume festival has been celebrated on this scale for around 10 years (i.e. years before refugees, Islamization or a loss of tradition were even discussed publicly in Germany).

Carnival and daycare center “Campus Kinderland”

In the end, the following remains: No, the daycare center is not abolishing carnival. There is no ban, just a request. According to the daycare center, the children are welcome to dress up all year round and there was also verifiably a costume party in the spirit of carnival on January 17, 2020, which was co-organized by the daycare center.
