“Find my Phone” – a 23-year-old film student monitors the thief of his smartphone using an app.

It may have already happened to some of you. You're out and about, you don't pay attention for a moment and your cell phone is gone.

As 'Computerworld.ch' and 'Futurezone.at' reported, this is exactly what happened to a young man from the Netherlands. But it was precisely this annoying incident that inspired the film director to create a very interesting project.

He got a new cell phone and, according to 'Futurezone', installed a special surveillance app called “Cerberus” under a false name on the system partition. The app remained active even after the smartphone was reset.

The manipulated cell phone allowed him access to the device's movement data as well as all applications such as SMS, messenger and address book.

The thief was monitored every step of the way. Anthony van der Meer secured location, audio, photo or video recordings. The film student compiled the result into a documentary entitled “Find my Phone,” which he posted on YouTube.

What's fascinating is that the filmmaker even felt compassion for the thief and asked himself the following question:

“Even though you get to know the person behind the theft up close and personally, the question remains: How well can you get to know someone based on the information on their smartphone?”
