Video: Fish jump ashore en masse in a harbor

It is quite common to find videos and images on Facebook that are redistributed without citing the source.

Like this video, which has been requested more and more recently:

You can see tons of fish jumping onto the curb of the dock. The video is said to come from Turkey.

The fact check

Unfortunately, we cannot confirm whether the video actually comes from Turkey. However, there are a wealth of similar videos showing schools of fish jumping onto land or into boats.

We don't know exactly why the requested fish jump out of the water, but there are several possibilities as to why they do this:

An enemy appears

Some species of fish jump out of the water to escape larger fish or a potential predator.

On the California coast you can even take part in the so-called “Grunion Run”. The fish species Grunion (Leuresthes) jumps onto the beach in masses to reproduce.
