An old woman stands hunched over a bus stop - and no one offers her a seat. An exciter? No.

And yet this image is used again. “ People used to pay more attention to others ,” is how the photo is commented. But as it is with pure photos: It is just a snapshot that is supposed to trigger emotions: the selfish youth who only pay attention to their cell phones and not to other people.

A snapshot

Anyone who looks at the comments will have already seen it: We have already explained it .

A snapshot

The image was copied very often and reposted by many users. The reason is obvious: it creates emotions! Apparently the old lady is ignored by the other passengers. She stands tensely in a shaking bus - while younger (and certainly healthier) people sit comfortably.

But like so many pictures on the internet, this is just a snapshot that doesn't tell us anything about the actual circumstances. And where you don't know something exactly, the gates are wide open for all sorts of assumptions.

The grandson answers

The picture was taken in Australia and spread quite widely there before other users around the world posted it to express outrage at the old lady's supposed situation.

The old lady's grandson also saw the picture and didn't hesitate:
he sent the following explanation of the picture to Ben Fordham's 2GB radio show

“The mature lady was preparing to get off to the next station – she is my nanna [grandmother].”

Ben Fordham then conducted a telephone interview with Howard Collins, CEO of Sidney Trains.

The image is a chance to remind people that in our world full of texts and headphones, we should sometimes look up. Is there anyone who would need your space more urgently?”

Conclusion

So the lady is not ignored, but rather stands there because she wants to get out straight away.
The ulterior motive for distributing the snapshot may be legitimate, but the image is a bad example.
