A status post or piece of information that made the rounds online in 2016 is currently causing a stir once again. This is also the reason why we are covering this topic again.

Anyone who has an old driver's license should have until 2033 to convert it to credit card format. However, the Federal Council wants to bring forward the expiry date.

It is the claim that all driving licenses issued before 2013 will expire!

There was already a big discussion about driving licenses and their exchange in the summer of 2016. Many websites took advantage of this discussion and exaggerated their reports. But what it's all about in the end is rather simple and undramatic.

Since 2013, newly issued driving licenses have only been valid for 15 years.

You can see this like an identity card: you don't have to take a driving test again after 15 years, but rather extend your driving license in this sense. This is about protection against counterfeiting, but also about ensuring that the data provided and the photo shown are always reasonably up-to-date and therefore comprehensible. (To be honest: every “rag owner” always likes to show the photo in his or her driver’s license with a big smile, especially because it is hopelessly out of date.)

Things are a little more complicated with the old “rags” that many people are attached to. All driving licenses issued BEFORE 2013 should actually remain valid until 2033. So that the many millions of nostalgia fans don't all have to have a new driver's license by the deadline in 2033, the Transport Committee has made a recommendation to the Federal Council ( here ).

This is now about a step-by-step plan so as not to cause the authorities to collapse. You can also read here that people whose driving license was issued BEFORE 1953 are exempt from this per se:

People born before 1953 are exempt from early exchange. This is intended to save them from having to exchange their driving license, although due to their age it is not certain whether they would like to use their driving license after the deadline of January 19, 2033 and would still need a valid driving license to do so.

The planned regulations for the “early exchange of driving licenses” are necessary to relieve the burden on the authorities. The new regulation would ensure that the authorities could cope with the large number of future applications.

Switching to the card (the new driver's license) does n't require a new driving test or health test, so you can take a deep breath . Everything else is scaremongering.

The police will be relieved once all driving licenses contain the same form and the same content in the same places, because until now the police have had to distinguish between hundreds of plastic cards and paper tickets.

The topic of staggering is off the table for now

There has always been talk of staggering the exchange period for older driving licenses, but this has not yet been officially implemented. In this respect, all notes issued before January 19, 2013 (current date December 5, 2018) must be exchanged by the deadline of January 18, 2033
