With these two new functions, Facebook wants to support users in order to better protect themselves from harassment in the form of fake profiles and hate messages.

As colleagues from t3n.de report, Facebook is introducing a new function against harassment.
Who among us hasn't received an unsolicited message?
Be it via Messenger or friend requests... insults, stupid comments, but also stalking can become a very annoying problem for some people on Facebook.

Recognize fake accounts

To do this, Facebook uses existing functions and expands them or builds on them.
Users who are harassed by other users simply block them. However, this gives the troublemaker the opportunity to simply create a new profile and use it to torment his victim again.
Facebook wants to better recognize such fake profiles and other fake accounts by using various signals to identify such profiles more reliably.
Such signals include, for example, the IP address through which people who have already been blocked can no longer send friend requests or messages to the person blocking, even via a newly created profile.
However, if the person blocking would like to contact the blocked person later, they can do so by simply contacting them.

Ignoring messages

If you use Messenger on a mobile device, you can automatically block people you don't like with one click without actually blocking the person behind them.
Facebook argues that it can make harassment worse if the person knows they are being deliberately ignored.
So the new Ignore feature simply moves the conversation directly to the filtered messages area, where it can be read without the sender receiving a read receipt.
This function is currently only available for individual chats, but it will soon be expanded to include group chats.
