Fake job offers on the Internet are increasing and because the fraud attempts are often not reported, the number of unreported cases is high.

As the 'General Anzeiger Bonn' reports, international fraud gangs place job advertisements online or send them by email.

Once they have spied on a potential applicant, they assume their identity or trick them out of their money by tricking the victim into thinking they have to pay agency fees or use special software.

According to Kai Fain, managing director of the German Institute for Compliance (Dico), the scam is particularly widespread in the USA and Great Britain.

But a trend can already be seen in Germany.

The data business

The fraudsters are primarily concerned with applicants' data, using the names of well-known and/or large companies in order to attract victims.

They want to use perfectly fake online application processes to get the applicant's social security number and sell them software so that they can do the supposed job from home.

The only way to protect yourself from these fraudsters is to be more vigilant and be careful when exchanging data.

You should generally be suspicious of unknown email senders and use multiple email addresses.

Reputable websites offer encrypted data transmission.

If in doubt, call the company yourself to make sure whether the job advertisement was actually sent by the official company.
