On Sunday, February 12, 2023, NATO was the target of a hacker attack.

A spokeswoman confirmed to the German Press Agency that cyber experts from the defense alliance were looking into the incident, which affected several websites. It could be read on Twitter that pro-Russian activists, including the Russian hacker group Killnet, attacked the website of the NATO Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ). The site was temporarily unavailable.

NATO did not provide any further information about the incident in the evening. The spokeswoman emphasized that the alliance is regularly confronted with cyber incidents and takes the issue of cybersecurity very seriously.

In the past, the Killnet group has been associated with attacks on the websites of the Bundestag, the police and critical infrastructure facilities in Germany. Last fall, the group was blamed for a cyberattack on the EU Parliament following a vote critical of Russia.
