With Apple's iPhone, the so-called emergency pass allows you to register as an organ donor - but only for US users!

For a few days now we have been receiving repeated inquiries about an article that is primarily aimed at iPhone owners:

For iPhone owners: Your cell phone is turning you into an organ donor and you don't know it?

Take your iPhone and go to Contacts under the phone. Go to your own profile (at the top), scroll all the way down. The last thing it says is: “Show emergency pass” in red. The factory specifies that you are an organ donor. You have to change this manually to “not an organ donor” if you don’t want to donate.

So Apple turns all of its users into organ donors from the start?

No! If you want to donate, you first have to register and that only works in the USA.

The emergency pass in detail

We already dealt with the topic once in 2016 At that time we contacted a beta tester.

Apple itself provides information about the emergency pass in the support section of the website . Overall, this is a subsection of the Health app that Apple has made available to its users since iOS 8:

The emergency pass can be edited via the Health app. The user can enter information such as allergies or illnesses and also specify people who should be contacted in an emergency.

The same goes for organ donation. If you want to become an organ donor, you have to register. So process the information independently.

Apple also points out on the support page that only users from the USA register . (see also Apple & Donate Life America bring national organ donation registration to the iPhone )

Austria: It is also worth mentioning that in Austria every citizen is automatically an organ donor. right to object applies here : Anyone who does not object to organ donation during their lifetime is considered an organ donor.

Germany: consent solution applies here : This means that the person concerned must actively consent to organ donation during their lifetime. For example, through an organ donor card. Only recently did Health Minister Jens Spahn present a draft solution to the contradiction .

Result:

The organ donation item in Apple's emergency pass only works for the USA.
