The claim

Photos are circulating on social media that allegedly show the cast of the “Harry Potter” films at a rave party in the late 1990s.

Our conclusion

The pictures are fakes. They are fictional and do not represent real people or real events.

Authenticity of the images

Also starring are Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort and Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. The images are captioned: “The Great Hogwarts Rave of 1996.”

Fact Check: Are 'Harry Potter' Cast's '90s Party Photos Real?

Analysis: The images were assigned to a Facebook group that specializes in artificially generated content. In addition, the timing is incorrect: The “Harry Potter” films were released between 2001 and 2011, and in 1996 Daniel Radcliffe would have been only seven years old.

Conclusion: Beware of fake content

This post shows how advanced technologies can be used to create deceptively realistic images. It underlines how important it is to critically question viral content and to rely on trustworthy sources. The viral party photos of the 'Harry Potter' cast are an example of artificially created images that do not correspond to reality.
