Love scammers are not an unknown phenomenon on social media. The main customs office in Munich is currently warning against fraud involving love or romance scamming.

In the past few weeks there has been an increasing number of reports from citizens to the main customs office in Munich that a valuable package is allegedly being held at customs and can only be triggered by a high demand for money.

The cases that occurred at the main customs office in Munich all follow the same pattern. A short contact via social media or dating sites turns into long messages within a very short time, from which supposed great love arises. The virtual partners then claim to send packages with valuable contents (e.g. money, gold or jewelry) to Germany so that they can then lead a carefree life for TWO.

The rest of the process is strikingly similar to the fraudsters' usual procedures: Gold or jewelry should be sent in advance using express services with well-sounding names, as they are not allowed to be taken on a flight for “security reasons”. Ultimately, the main customs office in Munich demands a large amount of money, otherwise the valuable package would not be received.

“As a precaution, the main customs office points out that customs NEVER demands money payments to a foreign bank account or domestic private checking account,” said Thomas Meister, press spokesman for the main customs office in Munich.
