A photo is worth a thousand words? Not in this case, because speculation led to false news.

We again received inquiries about an older status post on Facebook. The Dutch brewery Heineken is said to sponsor dog fights. The post creator then speaks out against the product and says “he will never drink this beer again”.

The photo is real. There is no image montage here, as the company even commented on it itself.

So it's not a fake, but a misinterpreted statement.

The fact check:

The dog fight took place in Mongolia in 2010. The organizer had neglected to remove the banners before the dog fight because they were left over from another event the day before. The organizer confirmed this in this letter , which Heineken published on their Facebook fan page on April 18, 2012.

Heineken also distanced itself from allegations of being in any way connected to such events. The company then also took the following steps:

  • The removal of all promotional materials that were still in the location.
  • Removal of all current product stocks from the club.
  • The business relationship with the club has been terminated, so the brand is no longer available in the club.
  • Prevention measures at other events to ensure that no illegal activities take place there.
  • Monitoring compliance with advertising and promotion guidelines.

Heineken also pointed out the misleading photo in the comment section at the time and corrected that the company had no interest in such events.

The Dutch brewery Heineken was wrongly “condemned”. However, the photo circulating is real and has not been manipulated.

Those responsible had failed to take down the company's flags after they were placed at the venue from another event.

Heineken took action in this case and issued a statement about it 6 years ago. The club also confirmed that Heineken had not sponsored dog fighting here.
