The new heating regulations are expected to be adopted later this year and then set out in the Building Energy Act (GEG).

Which new heating system is suitable?

Many homeowners are currently asking the consumer advice center for advice. They are worried about the ban on their gas heating. It has been heard that the installation of a new gas heater will no longer be allowed when replacing heating systems in 2024. If necessary, those affected would like to bring forward the replacement of the gas heating system with a new gas heating system to 2023.

Plans for heating replacement

Cathrin Becker, energy advisor for consumers, explains that there is currently a declaration of intent (concept) from the federal government that states that when installing a new heating system powered by fossil energy from January 1, 2024, “at least 65% renewable energy” should be used . This concept is not yet available as a law in written form. This means that it is not yet clear which requirements will apply from which point in time and which exceptions there will be. If the installation of a new gas or oil condensing boiler is currently planned, this project can be implemented without any further requirements. There is currently no ban.

“The 65% renewable share can be achieved through a hybrid system, i.e. through gas or oil heating in combination with a heat pump or with a biomass boiler (e.g. pellets).”

It is also conceivable to switch to heating solely with a heat pump or with a pellet system. This achieves 100% renewable energy. A fuel cell heater is also an option.

Specific design not yet known

Since the specific form of the requirements is not yet known, no binding statement can be made from today's perspective. The new regulations are expected to be decided during the course of the year and then set out in the Building Energy Act (GEG).

The consumer advice center offers individual advice on the subject of heating replacement and renewable energy.
