The claim
Several recordings from the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 claim that the Hitler salute is shown in the scenes.
Our conclusion
A detailed analysis shows that in both cases the hand was only stretched upwards with the fingers spread, but no Hitler salute was shown.
Social media users claimed that images from the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 on May 14 showed members of the winning Ukrainian band and the Polish presenter giving the Hitler salute. However, further footage showed that the subjects made different gestures.
The claims
In a short video you can see Oleg Psiuk, a member of the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra, raising his arm in the Hitler salute as he leaves the stage:
also distributed as a photo.
The Polish Eurovision speaker, actress and presenter Ida Nowakowska, is also said to have given the Hitler salute during the show.
This excerpt will also as a photo .
A closer look at the scenes: The member of the band
Next, take a closer look at each scene. Here is a video of the band Kalush Orchestra leaving the stage from a different perspective:
However, an image comparison shows that the videos do not show exactly the same place:
The light from the yellow spotlights moves across the ground. However, the floor plate in the second video (picture on the right) is not hit by the spotlight, and the man with the flag runs a little further away from him. The scene on the left must have been taken a few meters further back.
So is it unproven that he didn't give the Hitler salute?
No. In the second video you only see Oleg Psiuk in the 9th second when he has already raised his hand:
The scene with the alleged Hitler salute must have been filmed a few meters earlier, at a point where the spotlight hits the ground. So we re-watched the circulated video frame by frame and discovered this:
He had already held his hand up in salute a few meters earlier, but even there he didn't do the Hitler salute and had his fingers spread, which is usually difficult to see due to the angle of the shot and the very short shot.
A closer look at the scenes: The Polish speaker
The original recording with Polish speaker Ida Nowakowska can be seen on YouTube Here you can see that she has spread her thumb apart:
Here are three frames of the recording:
Conclusion
The claims are misleading. Videos from the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 show neither Kalush Orchestra member Oleg Psiuk nor Polish speaker Ida Nowakowska performing the Nazi salute - which would certainly have caused a huge media frenzy if it had actually happened would have been.
Also interesting:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj shows the Hitler salute in a picture.
So a Nazi? No, it comes from a sketch from his time as a comedian! Is Volodymyr Zelensky giving the Hitler salute here? Yes… in a comedian performance!
