More and more drivers are reacting to the high fuel prices, leaving their vehicles at home more often or considering buying an electric car. This is shown by a survey by Kantar on behalf of the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv). According to this, almost every second person switches to cycling, bus or train more often. In a similar survey in December 2021, 40 percent planned to do this. 38 percent say they save elsewhere. In December only 23 percent planned to do this. Only twelve percent do not want to react to the high prices at all. In December, twice as many (24 percent) were planning it. In order to enable drivers to switch to other means of transport, the vzbv is calling for more money for public transport and offers that are geared to the needs of passengers.

“Breaking the two-euro mark at the pump caused a jolt in people's minds. More and more people want to switch to bikes, buses or trains. But many people don't want to or can't do that and therefore have to save money elsewhere. Politicians are required to invest more in public transport and push for customer-friendly offers. That would be good for your wallet and would give more impetus to the necessary transport transition,” says Marion Jungbluth, head of the mobility and travel team at vzbv.

vzbv calls for a price moratorium for public transport

Specifically, the vzbv is calling on the federal government to further increase regionalization funds to finance public transport. After the 9 euro ticket has expired, there must be no deterioration in the offer. Likewise, ticket price increases would subsequently be counterproductive. A price moratorium on public transport is therefore necessary so that tickets for buses and trains do not become more expensive later.

The Bundestag wants to pass the law introducing a 9-euro ticket for public transport this Thursday, and the Federal Council will decide on Friday. Some federal states are demanding more money from the federal government in order to be able to continue offering the discounted ticket after the three months of June, July and August.
