The claim

A new TikTok trend shows that dog food can be used as a good source of protein and therefore as a replacement for protein shakes etc.

Our conclusion

Eating dog food as a source of protein for bodybuilders is not a good idea. It is not approved for human consumption and may cause long-term health problems.

Because of American Henry Clarisey's TikTok videos, in which he eats dog and cat food due to its high protein content, more and more people are imitating this. Although the food has a meat content of up to 70 percent and a low price, the question arises as to whether it is even tolerated by humans.

Henry Clarisey: The TikTok star who eats dog food

Every bodybuilder knows that protein is an important foundation for building muscle. Even the hardest workout in the gym will not be successful if the body is not provided with the necessary nutrients.

While in the past the focus was primarily on the protein content in protein powders, Henry Clarisey directed attention in a completely different direction. The American reached almost three million TikTok users with his video in which he recommends dog food as a source of protein for bodybuilders.

It all started when a user named @kizaro.adm pointed out that dog food is rich in proteins and that it's better not to google the protein content so as not to be tempted. Nevertheless, fitness influencer Henry Clarisey from New York decided to test what it tastes like for himself.

In the video, the young bodybuilder can be seen eating dry food from a bowl. In another video he uses wet cat food. The viral videos not only attracted international media attention, but also brought the company MyFitnessPal into the spotlight. After the video, more dog food was tracked in the app's accounts.

Henry Clarisey then launched a call on the social media platform stressing that eating pet food is not fit for human consumption.

But the question arises as to whether eating dog food actually poses health risks to humans.

Health risks of consuming pet food for humans

Although the ingredients list of dog food may seem unremarkable, it is not suitable for consumption by bodybuilders and other people. It contains meat that is not intended for human consumption due to health regulations. Even category III slaughter waste such as hooves, claws or bristles can be processed into animal feed and listed on the packaging as animal protein.

Although dog food is unlikely to contain toxins that would harm a dog, eating human pet food can still lack important nutrients necessary for a healthy diet.

Although eating dog or cat food once, like Henry Clarisey, has no immediate effect on health, it is not suitable as human food in the medium and long term.

Serena Williams' dog food experiment: Why the tennis star also advises against eating it

In the public spotlight, human consumption of dog food is nothing new. Former world number one Serena Williams posted a video on Snapchat in 2016 in which she admitted to trying her Yorkshire's dog food. However, unlike Henry Clarisey, Williams described the taste of the dog food as similar to cleaning detergent and had to go to the toilet shortly afterwards. Like Clarisey, she came to the conclusion that dog food is not suitable food for humans.

Conclusion

Rating: FALSE

Dog food is not a good option as a protein source for bodybuilders. Although it contains a high proportion of meat and therefore a lot of protein, the food is not intended for human consumption due to health regulations.

Even though some people such as the American Henry Clarisey or tennis star Serena Williams tried dog food in a public manner, it is not suitable as food for humans in the medium and long term and can cause damage to health. There are many other healthy protein sources intended for human consumption that can be used by bodybuilders.
