The number of apps that users have installed on their privately used devices is increasing.

24 percent more than in the previous year

There are an average of 31 apps on privately used smartphones in Germany, in addition to the pre-installed ones. Last year there were 25 – an increase of 24 percent. This is the result of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 1,004 people aged 16 and over, including 780 smartphone users. According to this, each 16 to 29 year old has an average of 42 applications installed on their smartphone. The number of installed applications decreases with increasing age; for those over 65, the average number is 19, less than half as many as for younger people.

“The range of apps has developed rapidly in recent years. Apps have become more important, especially in the areas of banking and finance, but also in mobility as well as in the areas of health, entertainment and shopping,” says Bitkom Managing Director Dr. Bernhard Rohleder. “The app market in Germany has grown enormously, especially during the corona pandemic.” Last year, a record turnover of 3.4 billion euros was achieved with applications for smartphones and tablets - an increase of 12 percent compared to 2021 and more than twice as much in the pre-Corona year 2019 with 1.6 billion euros. This year, sales are expected to remain at a very high level of 3.3 billion euros.

“The range of apps has developed rapidly in recent years. “Apps have become increasingly important, especially in the areas of banking and finance, but also in mobility as well as in the areas of health, entertainment and shopping.”

    The number tends to increase

Only 8 percent of smartphone users have fewer than 10 apps installed on their smartphone. At 17 percent there are 10 to 20, at 20 percent there are 20 to 30 and at 22 percent there are 30 to 50 apps. The group of those who have more than 50 on their smartphone has grown significantly (2023: 22 percent, 2022: 16 percent).
