Scammers are always looking to take money from their victims. The older people among us are in most cases the target of these fraudsters.

After recent attempts at fraud against older people, the police are once again warning of telephone fraudsters and their multi-faceted scams. Five cases were currently registered across the district on Tuesday in which fake police officers or alleged grandchildren tried to get the cash of unsuspecting and mainly older people. Among other things, an unknown caller tried to cheat a pensioner from Lübtheen out of 180,000 euros using the so-called grandchild trick. The alleged granddaughter claimed that she needed the money for a condominium that she wanted to buy this week. The fraud was discovered when the victim called her real granddaughter after the phone call with the fraudster. The money had not yet been handed over, so no damage was caused.

In the current year, the Ludwigslust police station has already registered over 180 such cases across the district. A corresponding number of unreported cases (crimes that are not reported) can be assumed. Fake police officers, fake bank employees, fake Microsoft employees as well as fake grandchildren and competition fraudsters often appeared with their professional scams. Although the vast majority of telephone fraud attempts were noticed by the victims in good time, in some cases cash was handed over to the fraudsters. As a result, the damage caused this year so far amounts to around 80,000 euros.

The police continue to warn against these scams and advise people to end dubious phone calls with dubious content as quickly as possible and not to give any information about their financial circumstances over the phone. In addition, cash should never be handed over to strangers. If in doubt or if a crime is suspected, the police should be informed immediately.
