Is taking a cold shower healthy?

A Dutch study has found that cold showers can have a positive effect on the immune system. The result of the study: There were around a third fewer sick reports among those who took cold showers. Cold showers or ice baths improve blood circulation, stimulate circulation and strengthen the immune system, among other things. The cold water can also reduce pain and make the body and mind more resilient.

Treading water

Unlike showering or ice bathing, when treading water only your legs and feet end up under the surface of the water. The principle was discovered by Pastor Sebastian Kneipp.

This means you are less likely to catch a cold, for example. If so, the symptoms should be milder or the cold should not last as long. Treading water also stimulates circulation and promotes blood circulation. Treading water is possible in special Kneipp basins, but also in your own bathroom - for example in the bathtub.

Is cold water good for the body?

Sports medicine specialist Jens Stening uses cold water applications as a therapy method. For him it is clear: it has a positive effect. According to Dr. Stening has various physiological effects on the muscles. This changed the blood flow to the muscles, the speed at which impulses were transmitted by the nerves and thus also the sensation of pain. Researchers from Jena also confirm an effect on the immune system. They were able to show that regular cold showers on the upper body stimulate the immune system. The test subjects then had more immune cells in their blood than before.

Healthy lifestyle

Cold water can actually be beneficial for the immune system - even if it is difficult to measure and comprehensive study findings are still missing. However, for sports medicine experts, cold water alone is not enough to strengthen the immune system. Exercise and a healthy diet are also important.
