There are claims that a vaccination against COVID-19 would increase illness due to antibodies. However, the thesis is wrong!

It is known that you are less likely to get COVID-19 despite a vaccination, but the course of the disease is usually not nearly as severe as if you are not vaccinated. However, a widespread article claims the exact opposite: the COVID-19 vaccinations would actually worsen the course of the disease; this is justified by a study from the Medical University of Innsbruck.

For those in a hurry

The claim is not true. In the study by the Medical University of Innsbruck (see HERE ), only tissue samples from unvaccinated patients who had a high number of antibodies during a serious illness were examined.

However, the findings of the study cannot be transferred to vaccinated patients, as one of the authors of the study himself says, since the vaccination only produces antibodies against the spike protein, not against the entire virus. Given the high number of people who have already been vaccinated, there should now be a wave of serious illnesses among vaccinated people.

The claim

The widespread article on the “Transparency Test” page (archived HERE ) is based on a study by the Medical University of Innsbruck. Accordingly, a high number of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies is associated with a severe course of the disease, as many non-neutralizing antibodies would bind to the virus and thus increase the production of immune components. The result is an increased inflammatory reaction in the body.

Since these autoimmune incorrect reactions caused by so-called cytokine storms have been known for a long time and there are a number of studies on them, the article raises the question of why this problem has not been investigated with COVID-19 vaccinations.

One of the study authors disagrees

The colleagues from “ Correctiv ” turned to the immunologist and molecular biologist Wilfried Posch , who was involved in the study. This made it clear that the conclusions in that article were wrong:

"The conclusion of 'transparency test' does not correspond to the conclusions we drew from the study, as we only examined immune responses in tissue samples from unvaccinated Covid-19 patients and these results cannot be transferred to Covid-19 vaccinated people."

The study showed that people seriously ill with Covid-19 had a low T cell response, high antibody titers and high inflammatory markers. The components of the immune system that are produced by the body itself (T cells and antibodies) are only produced after 7 to 12 days.

Please note: We are talking about unvaccinated people whose immune response must first be built up if they become ill with COVID-19. The immune system of unvaccinated people reacts very late, but then sometimes so strongly that an inflammatory reaction occurs, resulting in a severe course of the disease.

And what about vaccinated people?

The article concludes that such an inflammatory reaction must therefore occur more frequently in vaccinated people, since the vaccination causes antibodies to be formed much more quickly.

However, there is an essential difference, which was also taken into account when developing the vaccinations: the antibodies created by the vaccinations are only directed against the spike protein of the virus.

“In (unvaccinated) Covid-19 patients, antibodies are formed not only against the spike protein, but also against other viral proteins, and these probably make a big difference, but we did not examine this in more detail in our study.”

said immunologist Posch.

Immunologist Carsten Watzl also contradicts the claims in the article. In a thread on Twitter (see HERE ), he explains that based on previous findings with other diseases such as dengue fever and SARS, COVID-19 vaccinations do not produce infection-enhancing antibodies.

Reality shows most clearly that this is not just an assertion: So far, no so-called cycotine storms have been observed in vaccinated COVID-19 patients. With 2.72 billion people fully vaccinated worldwide (as of October 8) and 6.41 billion doses administered worldwide, this would have been noticed long ago - the intensive care units would actually have to be predominantly occupied by vaccinated people ( which is not the case ).

Conclusion

However, the findings of the study cannot be transferred to vaccinated patients, as one of the authors of the study himself says, since the vaccination only produces antibodies against the spike protein, not against the entire virus. Given the high number of people who have already been vaccinated, there should now be a wave of serious illnesses among vaccinated people.
