The feature ranks favorite accounts in the display and is intended to give users more control.

Instagram is working on a feature called “Favorites”. It promises users more control over what they see in their news feed. This allows users to select their favorite accounts, which are then listed in the display - apparently similar to what the parent company Facebook enables on its own platform. An Instagram spokesman confirmed to “TechCrunch” that they are currently working on an internal prototype.

Feed improvement planned

Instagram's current algorithm that determines what users see in the news feed is controversial. There are often complaints that many people don't see what is most important to them. This is where the new feature, which first came to the attention of Italian developer Alessandro Paluzzi, could help. He shared screenshots on Twitter that appear to show users being able to select favorites from a list of accounts they follow. Additionally, it appears that users will receive a notification when someone favorites them - similar to the "Close Friends" already available.

However, while close friends are primarily intended to allow you to share your own content with only a select group of people if you wish, favorites are primarily intended to influence what users see first in their feed. Although Instagram confirms that the feature is being worked on, it is not yet revealing any details. For example, it remains unclear how many favorites users can select.

Possible Facebook role model

There has been a favorites feature on Facebook for almost a year. The function makes it possible to select up to 30 friends and pages whose content will then be preferred in your own feed. It is conceivable that the Instagram favorites are based on this model. The feature could also help Instagram to position itself better in the content creator business. After all, leaks indicate that the platform is also working on paid subscriptions. Favorites could help ensure that paying customers don't miss updates from their favorite content creators - so they don't easily cancel subscriptions when they're annoyed.
