Instagram, the once image-focused app, is expanding its offerings and is now billed as a “text-based conversation app.” Unofficial sources already provide insight into the platform's plans to position itself as an alternative to Twitter.

A leaked marketing document that appeared in journalist Lia Haberman's newsletter reveals that there are plans led by parent company Meta to allow more text on an app similar to Instagram. Users can log in with their Instagram credentials and their existing followers will automatically be transferred to the new app.

More than just images: Text-based app competing with Twitter

The text contributions should have a maximum length of 500 characters and can of course be supplemented with photos, links and videos. According to reports from “TheVerge”, the design of the leaked documents is reminiscent of a mixture of Twitter and Instagram. The app aims to offer users a variety of settings to control who can see or comment on their posts. Blocked accounts in the Instagram app also retain their blocked status in the text-based subsidiary app.

Decentralization and compatibility: Potential innovations attract users

The potential decentralization of the new app opens up interesting possibilities. According to the leaked marketing slide, the new app will be compatible with other platforms like Mastodon. Users of these platforms should be able to follow the new Instagram app and interact with public accounts.

Unlike previous Twitter alternatives, which failed to gain a mainstream foothold despite some of Elon Musk's escapades, Meta, with its strong marketing power and established Insta community, would certainly be better positioned to attract dissatisfied Twitter users. So far, Meta has not made an official statement about the leaked information. However, it was confirmed back in March this year that the company was working on a text-based app.

The planned innovation goes hand in hand with the desire to position itself more broadly and to compete directly with Twitter. It remains to be seen how users will react to this change and whether Instagram can successfully enter the world of text-based conversations.
