Re-uploaded an old photo - the claim remains the same...

We receive a lot of requests for photos showing shipwrecked people. But one appears to be standing in the water.

This is how you become stupid!
This is where shipwrecked people are rescued and where they fight for their lives in 60cm deep water.

The fact check

We received the first inquiries about this photo back in February 2016. Colleague Jens made some important points that have since been examined in more detail Fake-Hunter

The first clue is the color of the water. The dark color indicates deeper water. Since in this age of digital art you can change the color of water quite quickly, this is by no means proof that these are real castaways. So:

Where are these people exactly?

First of all, you have to know that the material comes from the Turkish coast guard . If you look at the past operations, you will find a press release including the requested photo 16 Aralık 2015 MUĞLA/ Bodrum

In addition to this photo, the notice includes another photo and a link ( tıklayınız [.zip file] ) leading to the download of the mission video. This video can also be seen Aljazeera Turk

In this video you can see a ship approaching the people in distress. Such a ship in 60 cm deep water? The indication of the location in the statement also argues against the fact that the photo was taken near the beach: 3.9 miles southeast of the Turkish island of Karaada (Kara Ada) = that is the equivalent of 6.27644 kilometers.

But why does it look like the man is standing?

The video and photo analysis by the author of Fake Hunter provides us with a possible explanation.

This describes an optical illusion. A reflection creates the impression that the man is “longer” than the rest of the people swimming in the water.

You can read about exactly how reflection works here . Two terms are important to us in this example: total reflection and diffuse reflection.

In the case of a total reflection, a tree, for example, would be completely reflected in the surface of the water. The calmer the water, the clearer and more detailed this image becomes.

If the water is turbulent or very rough, as in the photo requested, the more “washed out” the image becomes, which is why there are only very poor reflections in the water.

If you look closely at the last few seconds (approx. from 00:00:21) of the video, you will notice that this effect occurs quite often.

Here it becomes clear that not only the man dressed in black is being “stretched”, but also the man in the red jacket.

Result:

The photo originally comes from the Turkish Coast Guard.

The fact that the water in the photo is only 60 cm cannot be true, as there are photos of the rescue of the shipwrecked people that show a ship approaching the people.

Why the man looks like he's standing in the water may be due to the reflection, because this photo couldn't have been taken near the beach. The photo is real.

“Whether you believe that or not. It is like that."
