According to a video, the Italian police are said to have joined the protests during a Corona demonstration. They took off their helmets and stood in the ranks of the demonstrators.

Since November 1st there has been a posting on Facebook with a video in which the Italian police can be seen. In the video, the police officers take off their helmets and it appears as if they are refusing their duty.

The whole thing happens to the applause of the people around. You can read the description of the video:

Protest in Turin / Italy against state Corona terrorism. The police take off their helmets and equipment and take the side of the people. Our Merkel vassals in uniform should follow this example.

The question is, are these really police officers who have joined the demonstrators and are now demonstrating against the coronavirus measures? Let's take a closer look!

Fact check Italian police and Corona protests

This video is not originally from the Facebook page where it was posted on November 1, 2020. You can see this in the watermark in the video, which refers to the TikTok platform and an associated account.

However, this video can no longer be found on the original account on TikTok. However, AFP's fact checkers have already found one result: This video was not recorded in October 2020!

There were protests against the Corona measures in Turin in October 2020, but this video has absolutely nothing to do with them. An image search for this video showed that this video was made in 2013.

It was also recorded in Turin, and what is currently being distributed is just an excerpt from a longer video. At the time, there were demonstrations against excessive taxes, austerity policies, as well as against excessive bureaucracy and also the European Union.

During these demonstrations, the police took off their helmets. However, this should not be interpreted as a gesture of support; according to the AFP fact check, the police wanted to defuse the tense atmosphere.

There are also other recordings of this video from other perspectives, which confirm the time of recording on December 9, 2013. It is therefore clear that this photo, which is supposed to show police officers sympathizing with Corona demonstrators, is much older and therefore has absolutely nothing to do with the current situation.
