Annual review 2019: Fact check on the video “Greta Thunberg without a script”

A short video on YouTube in 2019 caused some discussion, in which Greta Thunberg appeared quite perplexed!

For both the uploaders of the video and some users, this is evidence that Greta Thunberg is only “controlled by others” and cannot give correct answers if she “does not have a script”.

In the one and a half minute long video you can see Greta at a table with other young people; it is obviously a press conference.
A reporter asks her two questions, Greta asks for the first question to be repeated and then asks if anyone else would like to answer that question.

Incomplete translation

What you notice first is the incomplete translation of the subtitles, which is why we would like to point out the two differences.

Greta says: “ The message we want to send is 'We had enough' … and … anyone else want to answer that question? I can't speak on behalf of everyone."
Translation: "The message we want to deliver is "We have (had) enough" ... and ... does anyone else want to answer this question? I can't speak for everyone here. “
Subtitle: “ So our message is 'We've had enough' and uh... Anyone else want to answer? “

Here it is noticeable that the part “ I can't speak on behalf of everyone. “ (“I can’t speak for everyone here.”) was not translated.

Greta says: “ I think, maybe you should give some questions to the others as well. "

Here, too, the subtitles do not show Greta Thunberg referring to the other participants in a certain way, and there is a reason for that.

From minute 19:10 the reporters are allowed to ask the young people questions. The first question from a reporter from “Swedish Television” goes straight to Greta, which she also answers in detail. The UNICEF spokeswoman then asks the other young people to answer the same question from their perspective.

The small excerpt from the press conference begins at minute 21:29 minute 22:56 . The speaker then also comments that questions should also be directed to the other young people, which is what happens. As the course progresses, questions will be asked directly to Greta, which will be answered in detail by her.

Cherry picking

What you can see quite clearly from the excerpt chosen by the “Uncut News” site is a form of “cherry picking”. , taken out and interpreted, plus the incomplete subtitles, which are also intended to reinforce the impression that Greta Thunberg is at a loss overall.

Conclusion

No “missing script,” no proof that Greta couldn’t say anything without instructions. The short excerpt from the press conference, combined with an incomplete translation, is more of a targeted attempt to discredit Greta Thunberg and ignores the entire rest of the press conference.
