The fact check

Photo and story do not belong together. The dog shown is not Captain - but the story is true.

In September 2012, the Spanish-language newspaper La Voz an article about Capitán, a mixed-breed dog who slept for years at his master Miguel Guzmán's grave in Villa Carlos Paz, Argentina, after his master's death in 2006:

The dog in the video looks nothing like the one in the photo. Héctor Baccega, director of the municipal cemetery of Villa Carlos Paz, confirmed that Capitán lay down in front of his master's grave every day at 6 p.m.

The dog died in February 2018 - more than five years after La Voz's initial report. According to the newspaper, Capitán's remains were scattered near the entrance to the cemetery and a monument was erected . So Capitán kept vigil at his master's grave for 12 years.

Unfortunately, it remains unanswered which dog is shown in the requested photo. One of the earliest publication dates can be found on Reddit in November 2017.

Conclusion:

The story of Captain – or Capitán in Spanish – is true. However, the photo shown is not one of them. Captain was a black mixed breed dog and is very different in appearance from the sand colored dog in the photo.

Captain slept at Miguel Guzmán's grave for 12 years.
