Banned yesterday, allowed again today: In Brazil, a court has now decided again on the Jesus parody.

What happened? In our first article we wrote about a Jesus parody from Brazil on Netflix. In our article from January 9, 2020 we wrote ( compare ):

The streaming service Netflix has to remove the parody “A Primeira Tentação de Cristo” (The First Temptation of Christ) from its program.
Because the character Jesus in the parody of a Brazilian satirical group “Porta dos Fundos” suggests that he is gay, a judge in Rio de Janeiro has now ordered that Netflix must remove the parody.

This was preceded by various criticisms, a petition from a Catholic organization, but also an arson attack on the satirical group's office. In a first instance, satire was still permitted, but in a second instance, which caused a stir around the world, it was then banned.

However, this ruling caused protests again and the matter with the Jesus parody then went to the Supreme Court in Brazil.

Jesus parody allowed again

This is how quickly the Jesus parody can happen: on the evening of January 9, 2020, the Supreme Court in Brazil overturned the judgment of the federal judge from Rio de Janeiro.

According to the Tagesspiegel, Dias Toffoli, President of the Supreme Court, emphasized that freedom of expression is essential for a democracy. Satire cannot weaken Christian values, whose roots go back two thousand years.
