Kai Gniffke's quote that he could no longer tolerate the lies and manipulation of the German public is made up.

We received the following request about a sharepic that is currently being shared. This is about the German political scientist and journalist Kai Gniffke, who until recently worked at ARD-aktuell:

Hello dear mimikama team, the following photo is currently making the rounds here. But did Kai Gniffke really say that or is it a fake? Kind regards

ARD editor-in-chief
Kai Gniffke

“I can no longer tolerate these lies and manipulation of the German public and therefore hereby declare my immediate resignation.”

The fact check

On May 23, 2019, Kai Gniffke was director of SWR and left ARD-aktuell. He took up his new position on September 1, 2019.

A short time later, an old “April Fool's joke” circulated again in which he said exactly the same thing in 2016 . As colleague Andre writes: a pseudo-joke.

The origin of this quote is “Propagandaschau”, which started this rumor on April 1, 2016. be found on other websites online today

We also asked the Tagesschau and received the following information:

Dear Mr. Wolf, this site has made an April Fool's joke. With all modesty, if Kai Gniffke were to resign in front of the camera, the media response would probably be much greater. Thank you for inquiring! Best regards, Anna-Mareike Krause

Conclusion:

Kai Gniffke didn't say that. The quote comes from 2016 and was already an “April Fool’s joke” back then.

However, he quit ARD-aktuell and now works at SWR. This fact may also be the reason why this quote is circulating again.
