A map of the Internet - Drawn in the style and look of a historical world atlas.

Graphic designer Martin Vargic will release a new version of the “Map of the Internet” in 2021. He sat on it for almost a whole year, which isn't surprising when you see how detailed the map was visualized.

“Halcyon Maps”

On his website “Halcyon Maps,” Vargic writes that with this project he wants to depict the current state of the World Wide Web as a world map.

To do this, he assigned the largest and most popular websites from 2020 to 2021 to the respective countries and drew them as a graphic in the style of a historical world map.

For example, the color of the display is based on the logos or designs of the respective websites. The Dark Web also has its place.

More detailed version

Vargic had already published a “Map of the Internet” in 2014. In the current version, however, the illustration is a lot more detailed and also more informative.

For example, he added a legend to the edge of the map that provides information about the most commonly used languages on the Internet or data such as the launch of major websites.

The designer designs the most famous websites as “countries”, which he then combines as a kind of grouping. For example, news sites are neighboring countries and, overall, comparable to a continent.

It doesn't surprise us that a whole year of work went into this visualization. The first thing that happened here was certainly the analysis of the various websites, and finally the connections and possible representations were worked out before it was time to implement them as a design.

“Halcyon Maps”

On Vargic's website Halcyon Maps you can find different world maps on a wide variety of topics. So does a “Map of Festivals”, “Cats vs. Dogs” or a view of the “World in 1914”.
