Attention, we now have to approach this matter very carefully and sensitively, because there are a few inconsistencies floating around here. Basically, we don't want to talk about a fake or similar title, but rather just look carefully at what it says - and how often something was mentioned.

Therefore, let's start with the appearance of a warning article on Facebook. It's about the warning from the Kronen-Zeitung from July 8th, 2016, which, when it appears on Facebook, is entitled “Warning about baiting with razor blades in Carinthia” [ 1].

We are talking about Ebenthal in Carinthia. However, if you open this article, you will read something different:

Warning about baiting with razor blades in Lower Austria

[…] Prepared bait is repeatedly found in Ebenthal in Lower Austria

Ok – we just changed the state. And actually: there is an Ebenthal in Lower Austria [ 2 ] and also an Ebenthal in Carinthia [ 3 ]. Can happen.

This is what it says here:

Previously, walkers in Ebenthal had found sausages riddled with razor blades twice within just a few days. […]

The Austrian Animal Welfare Association has therefore already offered a 500 euro capture reward for the unknown animal torturer. After all, said managing director Susanne Hemetsberger in a press release, “children could also injure themselves with such bait.”

What does the animal welfare association say?

In a telephone conversation with the press office of the animal protection association, it quickly became clear: there is no current warning from the Austrian animal protection association on this topic. There, too, they don't know exactly how this information came about. In addition, with a little searching, we found a press release that reproduces this exact content, but is already a year old and comes from the Kleine Zeitung [ 4][5]:

From this it is now quite clear that Ebenthal in Carinthia was affected in 2015.

From this article we now learn about a similar incident in Klagenfurt at the beginning of August and the animal protection association's announcement regarding the offer of €500 corresponds exactly to that blade discovery [6]:

The Austrian Animal Welfare Association has decided to help the police and offer a reward of €500 for information that leads to the capture of the perpetrator(s).

Info from the Kronen-Zeitung

Of course, it is possible that there may be a new find that was not previously known. We therefore wrote to the Kronen-Zeitung and asked for brief information about where this report came from.

After all, we received a short message yesterday (July 11, 2016) that our query had been forwarded to the relevant editor, but as of today (July 12, 2016) there has been no response or corresponding information.

Since, as I said, we can neither deny nor confirm here, we also give the general information that the Austrian Animal Welfare Association also gives:

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog or cat to the vet immediately! Better a false alarm than late regrets, just as the police recommend keeping dogs on a leash and paying attention to changes in the landscape and reporting suspicious objects immediately.
